Firework tips

Fireworks can be an exciting time for us, but for many dogs they can be overwhelming and stressful. Preparing ahead of time can make a huge difference in making your dogs feel safe, calm and supported during firework season.
Here are some simple, practical tips to help you and your dog get through it as smoothly as possible.
Provide a safe space
This could be an open crate or even a little tent made from sheets. If your dog already has a favourite place, make sure it is accessible.
Avoid going outside when fireworks are likely
Go for walks earlier and/or try to fit toilet breaks in-between local firework events. Try reaching out on local Facebook groups asking what time neighbours are planning their firework displays.
Mask the noise with Tv or Radios
Using other noises in your household can help mask some of the fireworks but will also minimise the shock of a sudden loud bang.
Keep curtains and windows closed
Its not only the noises that can cause distress. The sudden unusual flashes of light can be unsettling for your dogs.
Try a snood
A snood helps muffle the loud noises of fireworks whilst also helps to make your dog feel cosy and secure. There are many dog snoods you can buy of you can easily make your own.
Provide enrichment toys
Long lasting chews and food puzzles can help distract your dog. Unfortunately if your dog has reached a high state of distress they may not accept food.
Don't change your behaviour
Our dogs are very clever, they pick up on everything! It is fine to give calm strokes and a cosy lap to sit on but if you are excessively worrying over your dogs distress, this can actually feed and confirm into the fear they are already expressing.
Ensure Microchip details are up to date
It is important that your dog can be identified in case they get spooked and manage to escape. *Microchips have been a legal requirement since April 2016*
